“Sea Monster (Saint Brendan’s Whale)” – White Line Print, 2024, Framed
Value: $
100
12 X 15 inches, matted and framed, print 5:5, based on a print depicting Saint Brendan the Mariner from the New Bedford Whaling Museum, by Kitt Shaffer of Westport, MA.
Kitt Shaffer‘s most recent works include white line printing as well as landscapes and figures in oil and pastel. She has a particular interest in landscapes of the Southcoast region and depictions of whales. Her many shows in New England and Italy, along with examples of her work, can be seen on her website.
The tale of St. Brendan the Navigator setting sail in a skin boat from the coast of Ireland in the 6th century has held great appeal for eons. According to legend, the Abbot of Clonfert set out with several companions in search of the mythological “Isles of the Blessed,” reported to lie somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. During the voyage, Brendan thought he had washed ashore, but in fact, his vessel had grounded on the back of a whale. On it he said Mass and gave thanks for their good fortune.

Dragonfly I, 2023, 8”x8”, Graphite on paper on board
Value: $
1200

Douglas Gilbert is a visual artist whose graphite and charcoal drawings navigate the space between abstraction and figuration, precision, and intuition. Through the disciplined accumulation of thousands of visible lines, he transforms simple materials into meditations on time, energy, and perception. His work explores the paradox between control and spontaneity, where gesture becomes both structure and thought. Gilbert now lives and works in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts, where he continues to refine his contemplative practice rooted in silence, rhythm, and transformation.

“Indian Woman with Courage”—Watercolor and wax batik with gold leaf, framed
Value: $
200
This is a painting of an older widow. Proud. In movement. I used gold leaf for the jewelry to symbolize how important these adornments are to them.
Sadly, part of Indian culture has been to remove widows’ wedding jewelry, not allowing them to wear it after their husband’s death. I learned about this cultural tradition from Friends of Kalangarai during our travels to India last January. This portrait is about the strength of this widow and her courage to adorn herself again.

“In their Footsteps”—Watercolor, framed #1
Value: $
125
I was struck by the colorful saris and the courage of the women widows who we met, many who had been made to feel like nothing, (faceless and nameless) after their marriages ended through death or divorce. But feet, like the roots of trees are strong, they hold us up in tough times and I became fascinated with painting the feet of the widows to symbolize all of this. It was humbling and an honor to paint something so personal and vulnerable and I hope I did it (and them) justice.
