Making Land Ownership a Reality: Reflections from the Journey of the Working Group for Women and Land Ownership (WGWLO)

In her presentation, Shilpa will delve into the “what,” “why,” and “how” of the women’s agriculture land ownership issue. She’ll articulate what the issue entails—how it is a dream for countless rural women in India. The “why” will be explored, emphasizing the profound significance of land ownership for women farmers in rural areas. Drawing from reflections on the journey of a collective of Civil Society organizations known as WGWLO (Working Group for Women and Land Ownership), Shilpa will illustrate the “how” by reflecting on WGWLO’s endeavors to secure and promote land ownership for rural women.

Environmental Justice and Well-being: Improving Energy Access to Empower Women in Rural India

The webinar will discuss a recently published study demonstrating the impact of providing skills-based training through a solar lamp initiative on women’s empowerment.  Longitudinal data from 313 women associated with the solar initiative in the states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, were collected to predict three indicators of women’s empowerment — assertiveness, decision-making, and satisfaction. The study found that women’s perception of assertiveness, satisfaction, and decision-making ability significantly changed.

Muslim Women’s Quest for Legal Justice

Speaker: Dr. Noorjehan Safia Niaz

Muslim women in India continue to be marginalized and disenfranchised due to patriarchal systems that significantly impact personal law—marriage, divorce, inheritance and custody issues. Dr. Safia-Niaz founded the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) as a national platform for Muslim women to present an alternative progressive voice. In this webinar, Dr. Safia-Niaz describes BMMA’s strategy to empower Muslim women in India, give them an identity and voice, and assume leadership roles in their communities.
